Yap's Mantas

In the diving world, Yap is in a unique category. The reason is its Manta Rays. All year round, Yap's waters are home to large groups of Manta Rays. These peaceful creatures stretch up to 4.5 meters (15 ft) from wing tip to wing tip. For those of us lucky enough to see the Mantas regularly, we still feel like we are encountering a magical world every time we see them.

Manta cleaning stations have long been discovered in Yap's Mi'l Channel and Gofunnu Channel. A cleaning station is a cluster of coral that house cleaner wrasse that swim up and clean the Manta Rays. The Mantas float above the coral in order to give the wrasse a chance to clean off any unwanted matter. Divers sit close to these cleaning stations and watch as the Manta Rays hover above and around us.

Since RiZE Diving Center is the only dive shop on the North side of the island, we are the closest to all of the Manta points!

More Diving

Aside from the breathtaking Manta Rays, Yap’s waters have much more to offer. Outside the reef you will find colorful hard and soft coral and fantastic landscapes ranging from drop offs to gradual slopes with large coral and rock formations and incredible varieties of sea life. The Micronesian blue is known for its incredible visibility, year round.

Inside the reef it can get very shallow, water depth averages 5-10 feet, depending on the tide. We will plan your dives around the tide. You can expect 2 tank dives to leave in the morning and departures for 3rd or 4th dives depend on the tide that day.

You can also dive or snorkel right off of our beach. You can expect to be greeted by some of our resident stingrays and in the evening you can see eagle rays and barracuda. Our village is located right next to Maap’s Blue Hole, where you can see interesting macro and coral, sting rays and sometimes even baby manta rays.

Although Yap is less known for its macro life, you can experience a wide variety on each dive. If you have specific macro life you are interested in, please let us know so that we can plan dives to show you what you want. The staff at RiZE Diving Center is constantly studying and researching Yap’s macro life and we are very excited to share what we discover!
